Joan Alderson (born March 5, 1935), later known by her married name Joan Braskamp, is an American former competition swimmer and Olympic medalist. She received a bronze medal at the 1952 Summer Olympics. Alderson was born and grew up in Chicago.〔Sports-Reference.com, Olympic Sports, Athletes, ( Jody Alderson ). Retrieved August 31, 2015.〕 Her father Edmund had been a collegiate swimmer at the University of Illinois, and she began swimming at the age of 5.〔 She first trained under coach Bill Moyle at the Beverly Country Club, and then under coach Walter Schlueter of the Chicago Town Club where her elite swimming potential was recognized.〔 Fellow Olympic swimmer Jackie LaVine, who also trained with the Chicago Town Club, served as her mentor.〔 As a 17-year-old, Alderson represented the United States at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland.〔 She received a bronze medal as a member of the third-place U.S. team in the women's 4×100-meter freestyle relay, together with teammates Jackie LaVine, Marilee Stepan and Evelyn Kawamoto.〔〔Sports-Reference.com, Olympic Sports, ( United States Swimming at the 1952 Helsinki Summer Games ).
